Botic van de Zandschulp vs. Richard Gasquet Wimbledon Odds, Preview, Prediction (July 2)

On the grass at Wimbledon, Richard Gasquet is in good physical condition once more. At age 36, it's difficult to expect much more from the Frenchman, who has reached the semifinals twice. He is currently in his tenth third-round match at the All England Club.

In a contest where the oddsmakers don't give the veteran much of a chance to win, he will face off against Botic van de Zandschulp. Let's see if that was a wise decision.

Gasquet Playing Below His Age

At 36 years old, Gasquet is still active and a challenge to the top players on the tour.

He defeated Ugo Humbert twice earlier this year and defeated Andrey Rublev in a set during the early-season hard court swing. When the tour switched to clay, he won a staggering 12 matches at both the ATP and Challenger levels, defeating Tommy Paul in Estoril and Daniil Medvedev in Geneva.

Given Gasquet's workload this year, it first appeared that the switch to grass might be problematic. However, the Frenchman quickly recovered and not only won a five-set match in the first round but also defeated Mackenzie McDonald in a four-setter in the second round.

The firmness and flatness of Gasquet's backhand make it a very dangerous weapon on this court. Really, his body is the only thing that has the power to stop him. At this stage, even with a day of recovery in between matches, he runs the risk of losing the struggle.

Van De Zandschulp Rising To New Challenge

Van de Zandschulp would probably be the player you would want to design for the modern game of tennis, especially for a hard or grass court.

He is a big man with a powerful serve and a forehand that travels far into the court. His whipping motion allows him to locate precise angles and hit balls that are often simply impossible to return.
Van de Zandschulp shot up into the top 50 with a legendary run at the US Open, and he has done well to back that up with some huge victories this year and strong performances including a run to the final in Munich and the semifinals at Queen's Club.

In relation to that, van de Zandschulp has performed admirably on grass this year. With Matteo Berrettini, Emil Ruusuvuori, and Marcos Giron knocking him out, he hasn't really had a bad loss. He has also defeated opponents like Grigor Dimitrov and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

With a straightforward four-set victory, Van de Zandschulp avenged his Wimbledon second-round loss to Ruusuvuori, and his triumph over Feliciano Lopez was also rather impressive given the Spaniard's superior grass-court skills.

Through two rounds, he has done a good job of dissuading the sceptics, but there is only so much tennis he can play.

Betting Value

Gasquet had previously met Van de Zandschulp. At the Australian Open this year, it appeared. The Dutchman completely dominated Gasquet in that match after dropping the opening set, forcing the veteran to retire due to injury.

Sincerably, a similar scenario could play out here. It's certainly feasible that Gasquet has reached the physical limits of his abilities. Although I'd want to place a moneyline wager here to hedge against that, most books now rate all retirements as voids, and the cost is a little too high.

Here, I'll gladly lay the games. While Lopez, a seasoned player, and Gasquet both have powerful serves, van de Zandschulp had no problems returning there. I see this as a three-set win that he can comfortably cover.

Prior to this year, Gasquet had lost all four of his matches in Wimbledon, and he is unprepared to compete at this level.
