A source claims that Gillespie and the Denver Nuggets, who didn't have a second-round draught pick but were prepared to make an offer if Gillespie wasn't selected, had reached an agreement on a free-agent two-way contract.

Gillespie, a graduate of Archbishop Wood High School, will receive a salary from the NBA while on the roster but a smaller payment from the G League when competing in the G League thanks to the two-way contract. It follows a typical developmental route.

Gillespie won the 2022 Bob Cousy Award for best senior point guard after leading Villanova to the Final Four in his fifth season. His career began when Villanova won the 2018 NCAA championship when Gillespie was a freshman reserve.


During his career at Villanova, Gillespie won the NCAA Championship and twice was named Big East Player of the Year. Gillespie improved steadily during his five years with the Wildcats and made a significant contribution during his final four years at Villanova. In 124 of his final games, Gillespie started for Villanova and recorded an outstanding 38.7 percent field goal percentage.
