Three months after Jackie Robinson broke the colour barrier in the National League, Larry Doby made his major league debut on July 5, 1947, with the Cleveland Indians, becoming the first Black player in the American League. (In the seventh inning of a game at Comiskey Park against the Chicago White Sox, Doby, pinch-hitting for Bryan Stephens, struck out in his first at-bat; Chicago won 6-5.)
