NBA Summer League: Five takeaways from Thunder's win vs. Jazz in Chet Holmgren's debut

NBA Summer League Rule 1: Reactions to Summer League games should not be disproportionate.

However, Thunder supporters should enjoy themselves. Why not hop on the Chet Holmgren hype train when it's already moving at warp speed? David Holt, the mayor of Oklahoma City, is donning the conductor's cap.

An instant remedy for a two-year basketball hangover in OKC seemed to be witnessed when Holmgren went all-out on Tuesday night in the Salt Lake City game.

Holmgren, the Thunder's second-round choice in the 2022 draught, had an outstanding Summer League debut against the Jazz as they were defeated 98-77 by the Thunder.

The 7-foot rookie made 7 of 9 shots for 23 points. He made 5-of-5 free throws and 4-of-6 shots from beyond the arc.

Seven rebounds, six blocks, and four assists were all recorded by Holmgren. In Holmgren's 24 minutes, the Thunder outscored the Jazz by 26 points.

In the beginning, Kofi Cockburn, a former Illinois All-American, was blocked. Tacko Fall, a 7-foot-6 monster, was the target of a swat. There were other shots that the Jazz refrained from taking out of respect for Holmgren's length of cover.
There were 3-pointers throughout transitions and out of pick-and-pops. A transition dunk and a Dirk Nowitzki fadeaway shot were both made.

Both subtle and not-so-subtle trash talking occurred.

If ESPN's cameras hadn't been there, Thunder general manager Sam Presti and coach Mark Daigneault, who were seated next to one another at Vivint Arena, might have given each other a chest bump.

Even though it was just a Summer League game, Holmgren had a great Summer League game.

Jalen and Jaylin

Jalen Williams and Jaylin Williams, two Thunder rookies, spell their names differently.

Public address announcers and TV broadcasters are not aided by this.

The broadcast team became confused after just one Summer League game since their names are pronounced similarly.

Keep in mind that Santa Clara native Jalen Williams goes by J-Dub. J-Will is the alias of Arkansas native Jaylin Williams.

But even that is unclear.

Craig Bolerjack, the play-by-play announcer, remarked, "J-Will attacks." Instead, J-Dub

Bolerjack reacted and stopped. Jalen Williams was making his way to the basket. Jaylin Williams, not so.

The guard Jalen Williams made 7 out of 9 shots, all of which were made in the hoop.

The power forward Jaylin Williams had a quiet evening with just two points and six rebounds.

Giddey too good

Josh Giddey started off with a couple of careless turnovers.

But as he settled down, you began to question why he was lying on the ground. Giddey is unquestionably a step above Summer League opposition, most likely because he only participated in 54 games as a rookie.

That's encouraging for the Thunder's second-year player.

Giddey scored 14 points and dished out 11 assists for a simple double-double.
