Wimbledon updates | Maria reaches 1st GS semifinal at age 34

England's WIMBLEDON (AP) — The most recent from Wimbledon (all local times):

3:30 p.m.

Tatjana Maria defeated Jule Niemeier 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 to progress to the Wimbledon semifinals, reaching her first Grand Slam final four at age 34.

To advance to the championship round, Maria must defeat either third-seeded Ons Jabeur or unseeded Marie Bouzkova.

Only six women in the Open era—including the 103rd-ranked Maria—have advanced to the Wimbledon semifinals after turning 34.

Maria defeated Jelena Ostapenko, the winner of the 2017 French Open, in the fourth round after battling back from a set down.

In the decisive game, Niemeier was defeated after he hit a backhand into the goal on match point. Niemeier only other participation at a Grand Slam competition came as a qualifier at the French Open, when she lost in the opening round.

The quarterfinals of the grass-court Grand Slam will begin with six-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic on Centre Court, followed by third-seeded Ons Jabeur.

In the main stadium, the top-seeded Djokovic will face Italian Jannik Sinner.

The Czech Republic's Marie Bouzkova will then take against Jabeur.

Tatjana Maria will face Jule Niemeier on Court No. 1. The two German competitors have never advanced this far in a Grand Slam competition. The following match will feature David Goffin and ninth-seeded Cam Norrie.

Norrie aims to become just the fourth British man in the Open era to make it to the Wimbledon semifinals. The other three are Roger Taylor, Andy Murray, and Tim Henman.
