Cristiano Ronaldo Embarrassed by Columbian Footballer Luis Diaz as Liverpool and Manchester United Transfer Truth laid bare

Luiz Diaz - When it comes to pressing, Cristiano Ronaldo has been overshadowed by Luis Diaz.

With Cristiano Ronaldo supposedly attempting to leave Manchester United, social media is constantly flooded with details on his whereabouts and prospective next teams. It's difficult to imagine him fitting in at Old Trafford under Erik ten Hag.

When Ronaldo returned, the manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, was forever enslaved to the club's history. That will not be the case with a visionary at the head.

There has been significant discussion about whether his return was beneficial to the Red Devils. While Ronaldo scored plenty of goals, as a finisher of his calibre was bound to do, he provided almost little else, and the club performed significantly worse than the previous season. A comparison of the Portuguese international and a signing made by Liverpool last season reveals a significant difference and a gap that is only going to widen.

"Luis Diaz won possession [in] the offensive third as many times as Cristiano Ronaldo in the Premier League last season and he only made his debut in the competition in February (14)," WhoScored recently tweeted.

This comes as no real surprise. Ronaldo's pressuring has deteriorated since the data was made accessible, and he is unlikely to improve at the age of 36. After averaging 9.4 pressures per 90 minutes in 2018/19, he fell to 7.7 the following season, 7.2 in 2020/21, and finally 6.7 with United. He has the lowest rate of any forward in one of Europe's top five leagues.

However, the tweet's worth stems from Diaz's exceptional performance. The Colombian recovered possession in the final third 14 times in 958 minutes of play time, or 1.3 times per 90 minutes. This may not appear to be a large number, but it is an intriguing figure for four reasons.

First and foremost, Damien Comolli was FSG's first Director of Football at Liverpool. He was said to be obsessed with particular metrics, one of which being final third regains. Comolli was instrumental in the signing of Luis Suarez, who had more possession wins in the offensive third than any other player in the Premier League in 2011/12.

Nonetheless, his rate was 0.9 per 90 minutes, which was lower than Diaz's rate last season. However, football in England has developed during the previous decade, with Jurgen Klopp (and other managers) making high pressing more popular. Diaz would have easily dominated the charts ten years ago, but he didn't in 2021/22.

The surprising thing here is that two of the three players with higher rates per 90 were also Liverpool players. According to Fotmob, James Milner and Roberto Firmino both had 1.8 possession victories in the final third, while Armando Broja had 1.4 per 90 minutes. Although the latter attained his rate over a considerably greater sample of pitch time than Diaz, his two Liverpool teammates played within 100 minutes of him.

Liverpool's newest number 23 not only defeated Suarez of the past and the majority of the competitors in the current Premier League, but also himself in Portugal. Diaz averaged 1.1 final third recoveries per 90 minutes in the Primeira Liga last season, up from 1.0 the previous year. His pressing appears to have already improved since arriving to England, which is our third item of interest.

Some of this could be attributed to his desire to make a good impression on his new management, coworkers, and supporters. But it also leads to the most intriguing aspect of all: Diaz accomplished this without spending any significant time on the training ground with Klopp and the club's other coaches.

In the Reds' first encounter of the month, he made his debut against Cardiff City. Ignore the international break the following month (during which Diaz was already with Colombia), and Liverpool didn't have a game-free midweek until the six days before the Champions League final.
