Who is David Roddy? Forward with linebacker build headed to Grizzlies after 2022 NBA Draft

David Roddy, selected by the 76ers with the number 23 overall pick for the Grizzlies, may have been the biggest reach in the 2022 NBA Draft.

That's not a criticism on Roddy, who demonstrated his versatility as a forward for Colorado State. However, he is a rare sight among league players.

6-6 forward from Colorado State named David Roddy weighs 260 pounds. Roddy, who has the physique of a linebacker but one of the most deft shooting strokes in this year's draught class, hit 44 percent from three in 2021–2022 on 3.4 tries a game.

However, Roddy is more than just a skilled marksman. For little guards and tiny wings, he presents a matchup nightmare. Last season, the 21-year-old made 62 percent of his 2-point tries. Karl-Anthony Towns, one of the top post scorers in the NBA and the first overall choice in the draught, nailed 57.7 percent of his 2-point attempts in just one season at Kentucky.

Roddy plays like a big man and easily disarms more vulnerable players on the block. However, he also has extremely fluid footwork, which enables him to create openings low on the field.

Roddy played football in high school and was a standout quarterback, tossing for nearly 2,000 yards and 20 touchdowns as a senior. This may account for his quickness of foot. Numerous universities made offers to Roddy, including North Dakota State and Wyoming, where Josh Allen played (where Carson Wentz played).

After that, Roddy decided to try his luck in the NBA. Roddy outperformed expectations at the NBA Draft Combine, measuring 6-6 in shoes and having a wingspan of about 7 feet, according to Jonathan Givony of ESPN. Roddy was selected with the 23rd overall choice in the draught.

What can David Roddy bring to the Grizzlies?

Roddy makes me think of the old Grit and Grind Grizzlies. His physique appears to be ideal for the demands of NBA play. He can shoot, but it's unclear whether he will be able to dribble and shoot at the next level. He is an excellent passer, the kind of cunning player who can use his scoring prowess to create space for others.

Grant Williams of the Celtics is another NBA player who, despite not having the biggest build, is making an impact. Although he didn't exhibit the shooting prowess that Roddy had at Colorado State, he has nonetheless developed into an important NBA player. Williams frequently makes a temporary switch to the best wing on the opposing team.

That doesn't mean Roddy can defend as well as Williams, who in the 2021–2022 season fit right into Ime Udoka's plan. Roddy, however, is strong, tall, bulky, and knowledgeable. Ja Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr., Dillon Brooks, Brandon Clarke, and Desmond Bane are among the young players on the squad that have swiftly grown into important players.
