CAREER-BEST WIMBLEDON ENDS FOR AJLA TOMLJANOVIC

Another career-best run at Wimbledon that ended today in the quarterfinals will teach Ajla Tomljanovic a lot.

Elena Rybakina, who was ranked higher, was first tested by Tomljanovic's early display of strength and dexterity, but Rybakina eventually prevailed 4-6 6-2 6-3.

Rybakina needed an hour and 51 minutes to complete her come-from-behind victory in the match that was the longest of the competition.

Tomljanovic is rated 44th in the world going into Wimbledon 2022, 21 spots behind Rybakina, who is ranked 23rd. While competing in The Championships for for the second time, her 23-year-old opponent was making her eighth main draw debut at SW19.

The contrast was evident as Tomljanovic assumed command right away. On Wimbledon's No. 1 Court, Tomljanovic was the early aggressor thanks to her backhand, which combined force and precision.

The Australian was quick to take advantage of Rybakina's jitters by managing her own serve superbly. In a drawn-out third set, a determined Tomljanovic won two break points and converted on her third to gain some great momentum.

The first set was won by Tomljanovic in 41 minutes, the first time Rybakina has lost at the 2022 Championships despite her usual composure.

It was a little disheartening because I thought I played extremely well in the opening set. In fact, Tomljanovic noted, "(it was) one of the cleaner sets I've played during the competition.

But the big-hitting Rybakina, who entered today's match with a tour-high 197 aces for the season and an unmatched 29 at this Grand Slam, was always going to depend on a strong serve.

With 15 more against Tomljanovic, the Australian gained a crucial advantage when his performance dipped in the second set.

Rybakina applied some initial pressure, but Tomljanovic handled it brilliantly, breaking back right away when she lost service for the first time in the second set. But Rybakina convincingly asserted the ascendancy with a run of seven successive victories.

When Tomljanovic broke serve as Rybakina initially served for the match at 5-2 in the third set, there were momentary hints of improvement, but they were short-lived. On her second attempt to serve it out flawlessly, Rybakina secured victory with a trademark ace.

"I thought she obviously boosted her level in the middle of that split second. She actually began serving very, really well. And just fewer errors from the back," Tomljanovic added, finding some solace in her comeback in the third set.

"I made an effort to push back. It had gone too far. In the 3-5 game, she once again served incredibly well. Yes, I'm just frustrated since I thought my game made me appear to be present in person.

Rybakina will carry important confidence into her upcoming match against Simona Halep after becoming the first Kazakh player to advance to a Grand Slam semifinal. She made 28 unforced errors and 34 wins while converting five of the nine break chances she was given.

Tomljanovic will also see the bright side of advancing to the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the second time in a row, where she also defeated Barbora Krejcikova and Alize Cornet after coming from behind.
"I'm quite proud of myself for being able to play two consecutive quarters. I believe that's something that I'll be proud of no matter what," she said, admitting that her exit from the competition today felt "a little bit different" from her exit from the same competition in 2021 to eventual victor Ash Barty.

"I entered (today) with a strong conviction that I could win, but last year that may not have been the case. That is what is most disappointing.

Nevertheless, Tomljanovic will continue her winning streak into the season on hard courts as it serves as a foundational piece.

The good news, she said, is that she was "playing fantastic tennis." She added, "I don't see why I can't put myself out there again in the next Slam." "I know it's been a step forward, and I can only build on that," the speaker said.
