MLB Power Rankings: Post-All-Star Break Edition: Yankees, Dodgers, and Astros compete for first place

MLB Power Rankings: Post-All-Star Break Edition: Yankees, Dodgers, and Astros compete for first place

In more ways than one, it's blockbuster season.

We're just a few weeks away from the trade deadline, and no one knows what will happen: With an extended postseason picture this year, clubs will either be content with where they are and opt not to add, or they will be active in order to make a push for the playoffs.

Given the present situation of the division and wild-card races, it's difficult to predict how it will play out. Along with the three AL wild-card clubs entering the second half — the Rays, Mariners, and Jays — four more teams are within 3 1/2 games of a postseason place.

The situation is clearer on the Senior Circuit: The Giants and Cardinals are both within a half-game of the last wild-card berth, while the NL East and NL Central are still up in the air.

Despite everything, there are some recognizable names at the top of this edition of the Power Rankings: As has been the case all season, the Yankees, Dodgers, and Astros continue to compete for the title of "best in baseball" (and, really, for like the last three or four seasons).

We're in the midst of summer blockbuster season, so here are the Power Rankings after the All-Star break, with a movie twist. Do not, as always, @ us:

Baseball Power Rankings

The box office smashes

1. The Yankees

Just when you thought it was safe to return to the sea, the Yankees remind you that it isn't.

There are no flawless teams, and the Yankees have shown hints of humanity in recent weeks, finishing 8-7 in July before destroying Boston before the All-Star break.

New York was scuffling, and despite a 13-game lead in the AL East, the Yankees still had issues to answer for the remainder of the season. Despite this, they remain the American League's great white sharks.

2. Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers have no obvious flaws and a deep enough farm system to swing a deal for anything they may need at the deadline.

Baseball's version of "The Avengers" does not rely primarily on the performance of one man: Walker Buehler's absence has just enabled Tony Gonsolin and the rest of the Dodgers rotation to have a successful season. This includes All-Star Game starter Clayton Kershaw, who seems to be in his prime this season.

3. The Astros

Is the Astros the "Justice League" if the Dodgers are the Avengers?

While they are much superior than any version of the film that was released, the Astros are just as strong.

They've cut the distance on the Yankees for the best record in the American League, and they should get MVP contender Yordan Alvarez back soon to keep the pressure on.

4. Mets

The Mets were on the brink before taking two of three from the Braves the week before the break. Now, they'll be getting reinforcements, namely in the starting pitching ranks.

"Mad Max" Scherzer recently returned from an oblique injury, and he looks just as Max (and arguably more mad) as ever. He's thrown 19 1/3 innings and allowed just three runs and has struck out 31 since returning.

They'll also be getting Jacob deGrom back at some point in the near future.

5. The Braves

"The Hangover" is finished: After sleeping through the first two months of the season in defense of their World Series title, the Braves have gone 33-11 since the beginning of June and have been chasing the Mets for first place in the NL East in recent weeks.

Spencer Strider has been outstanding for Atlanta: Strider has thrown to a 3.43 ERA (2.33 FIP) in 50 innings pitched since joining the rotation, surrendering 19 earned runs. He's also struck out 77 batters. Not bad for a first try.

6. Padres

The Padres are without Fernando Tatis Jr., but you'd never know it.

Don't forget that Manny Machado is still in a class by himself: San Diego's third baseman is enjoying an MVP-caliber season with the Padres and is on track to have one of his greatest seasons overall.

Finally, the Padres could use some extra offense. They might get it soon with Tatis, but they could have it even sooner if they make a deal for a specific available outfielder.

7. Brewers

Corbin Burnes is quietly putting up another Cy Young-type season. This season, he has 144 strikeouts to 29 walks, 11.4 Ks per nine innings, and a 2.14 ERA (2.90 FIP). That's all very well.

Burns is up against Miami's Sandy Alcantara and a few other aces in the NL, but he remains the Crew's "Top Gun."

8. Twins

Minnesota is mostly here because it leads the American League Central. It doesn't seem like Carlos Correa will be traded before the trade deadline, which was a major topic when Minnesota initially signed him this winter.

Some of it is due to Royce Lewis' unlucky ACL injury, which will keep him out for the rest of 2022 and presumably most of 2023.

The All-Star break arrived at an ideal moment for the Twins, who are 7-8 in July after going 13-15 in June. They seem to be avoiding becoming "Superbad" for the time being, but they'll need to ramp it up again in the second half of the season.

9. Rays

Doesn't a low budget and a lot of heart scream "(500) Days of Summer"?

Shane McClanahan heads a good Rays staff, but Tampa Bay isn't producing the offensive output it had in 2021 and previous years. The Rays will almost certainly reach the playoffs, but they still have a lot of games against AL East opponents still to play this season: The Red Sox and Blue Jays will most likely compete for a wild-card place the rest of the way.

10. Blue Jays

To be honest, it seems like a wasted year for the Blue Jays, who opted to engage in some "Risky Business" after dismissing Charlie Montoyo in the hopes of improving their season.

The Jays won five of their last six games before the break, so maybe they're on to something.
